How to make diseases disappear | Rangan Chatterjee | TEDxLiverpool

Can you actually make a disease disappear? Dr Rangan Chatterjee thinks you can. Often referred to as the doctor of the future, Rangan is changing the way that we look at illness and how medicine will be practised in years to come. He highlighted his methods in the groundbreaking BBC TV show, Doctor In The House, gaining him much acclaim from patients, his contemporaries and the media.

He is the author of the international bestseller, The 4 Pillar Plan — amzn.to/2yGfpuB which has been released in the USA and Canada under the title, How to Make Disease Disappear — amzn.to/2GstJf6 Rangan’s 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS includes internal medicine, immunology and general practice. A pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, he also uses techniques from other disciplines he has studied including movement kinetics and functional medicine.

His own journey of learning was accelerated when family members fell ill and now Rangan is helping people to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of their illnesses, something which is often not achieved in 21st century health care, evidenced by a steady increase in the rates of chronic disease.

Rangan is a super-generalist, looking at as many factors as possible which can create wellness or illness. His talk is testament to how our thinking around the concept of disease needs to change to help form a map for future healthcare.

Lessons from Nursing to the World | Kathleen Bartholomew | TEDxSanJuanIsland

How can a profession with amazing potential for human connection fall short and fail to offer compassionate care? And why do nurses too often go in the other direction—and do harm?

Registered Nurse Kathleen Bartholomew dissects the hierarchical culture within the nursing profession, and examines why nurses who are devalued and shamed are much more likely to make mistakes and relay critical patient information to a physician.

Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN, has been a national speaker for the past fourteen years. She was nominated in 2010 by Health Leaders Media as one of the top 20 people in the U. S. changing the culture of healthcare — specifically for calling attention to the dangerous impact on patient care of disruptive behavior by medical professionals, as well as the critical need for better physician-nurse communication.

Kathleen is the author of five books and is best known for her pioneering work, “Ending Nurse to Nurse Hostility” (2006), which offered the first comprehensive and compassionate look at the etiology and impact of horizontal violence on both patients and nurses. As a health care culture expert, Kathleen now speaks about patient safety, communication, leadership and power to hospital boards, the military, senior leadership, and front line staff.

A better way to treat psychiatric conditions? | Dr. Eleanor Cole | TEDxNyarugengeWomen

Dr Cole who is a Postdoctoral Scholar, Autism and Developmental Disorders Researcher at Stanford University presents new treatments that have the potential to treat psychiatric conditions quickly and without side-effects. Most treatments for psychiatric conditions affect the whole brain (e.g. medications). These treatments don’t work very well and have side-effects. The new treatments Dr Cole presents, only treat the areas of the brain that are functioning differently in someone with a psychiatric condition. These new treatments have the potential to be better and act quicker than existing treatments.

Dr. Eleanor Cole is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University and Director of the rTMS lab at the Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute in California, USA. Dr. Cole completed her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging at The University of York in the UK. Her research is focused on developing and optimizing novel transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatments for psychiatric conditions including depression. Alongside her research, Dr. Cole has run an award-winning campaign supporting the mental health of students, run peer support groups for adults with ASD and currently volunteers as a counsellor for a crisis helpline.
